Dental Assistant Program with Clinical Externship

The Dental Assisting Program prepares students for entry level positions in one of the fastest growing health care positions - Dental Assisting. The Dental Assisting program will cover key areas and topics exposing the student to both classroom and hands-on instruction. The classroom instruction reviews the necessary anatomy, terminology, legal and ethical issues as well as the policy and guidelines necessary to understanding the scope of practice and the practical aspects of dental assisting. Topics include instrument identification, equipment maintenance, tooth structure and oral cavity anatomy, dental anesthesia, sterilization, and charting. The student will learn the steps necessary to assist the dentist while providing quality dental care within the community. Program includes review of tooth charting, restorations, bridge implants, bitewing, panograph, and periapical x-ray and the mixing of dental cements.

Clinical Externship: As part of this Dental Assisting program, you will be eligible to participate in a 40 hour clinical externship.

National Certification: Additionally, this 100 hour course includes a CPR certification and covers the relevant material necessary to prepare students to take the State of Texas “TSBDE” Dental Assisting exam offered throughout the State of Texas.

  • Dental anatomy and physiology
  • Tooth charting, tooth surfaces, and classification of restorations on a tooth
  • Parts of the jaw and areas of the mouth
  • Oral health and preventions of dental disease
  • Infection control in dentistry and occupational health and safety
  • Patient information and assessment
  • Foundation of clinical dentistry
  • Dental radiology
  • Single crown restoration, bridge, implant, partial denture, and full denture
  • Dental equipment, accessories & treatment room
  • Dental hand pieces and accessories
  • Dental cements and impression materials
  • Coding of radiology services & using ICD-10-CM codes
  • Assisting in comprehensive dental care
  • Dental administration and communication skills

Education & Certification

  • Students should have a high school diploma or GED.
  • Students who complete this comprehensive course would be prepared to sit for the Dental Assisting National Board (DANB) – Radiation Health and Safety (RHS) exam, and the DANB – Infection Control Exam (ICE).
  • In many states, DANB-RHS certification is required to work in dental radiography.
  • In addition to facilitating entry-level administrative positions, this course is ideal for students interested in pursuing a future formal dental hygienist program.

Dental Assistant Program classes are offered on campus and online, giving you the option to choose the format and schedule that works best for you. Our classroom programs give you the familiar experience of working within a traditional classroom setting. Online classes offer the same great program as the traditional class with the added flexibility of attending class from anywhere or at any time.
