Bachelor of Sciences in Geosciences With Geochemistry

Professor talking to a group of students.

The Geochemistry degree program at the University of Houston-Downtown provides both a broad-based curriculum in the liberal arts, the Natural Sciences and a set of courses specific to geology and a geochemistry focus. This concentration requires several courses that cover a broad range of geochemistry-related topics. The degree is designed to meet the needs of those interested in graduate work in geology or geochemistry and careers in the earth science-related industry that requires knowledge of geochemistry-related issues. Valuable courses include:

  • mineralogy
  • petrology
  • structural geology
  • physical sciences
  • mathematics
  • engineering
  • computer science

PROGRAM LEARNING OUTCOMES

Graduates who earn a BS in Geosciences will be able to:

  • Demonstrate basic knowledge of the discipline (Basic Knowledge).
  • Demonstrate laboratory skills common to modern laboratories (Laboratory Skills).
  • Effectively communicate scientific information in writing and in oral presentations (Communication Skills).
  • Demonstrate the use of scientific reasoning to analyze and interpret data and implement project-based activities (Scientific Reasoning and Research).
  • Work as part of a team (Teamwork).
  • Demonstrate an understanding of the ethical standards for the responsible conduct of scientific research and its applications (Ethics).

DEGREE PLAN INFORMATION

The following four-year degree plan is based on the UHD 2021-2022 academic catalog. Students should meet with a UHD Academic Advisor to develop their own plan.

ADMISSIONS AND DECLARATION OF MAJOR

Students may be admitted to and declare a major in Chemistry With Biochemistry if they meet the following criteria:

CAREERS

Graduates will find several career options and opportunities to choose from in a career as a geochemist. Many find careers in industry, environmental management, and government policy. Most geochemists divide their time between working in labs, the office and doing fieldwork collecting data and examining samples. Depending on the area of interest students study within their degree, career options include:

  • Geochemist
  • Hydrologist
  • Geographers
  • Geoscientist
  • Petrologist
  • Petroleum Geologist
  • Research Geologist
  • Structural Geologist
  • Exploration Geologist
  • Environmental Engineer
  • Laboratory Technician
  • Staff Production Geologist
