B.S. in Sociology Degree Sheet
A Bachelor of Science in Sociology provides a strong liberal arts foundation for entry-level positions in business, social services, and government, and for those who are interested in furthering their education in areas including law, social work, and counseling.
The study of sociology, which is the study of human behaviors and interactions within group contexts, provides a unique perspective for studying complex social problems including poverty, deviant behaviors such as crime, violence, and drug use. Courses in sociology also address the functional importance of social institutions, such as family, religion, government, education, mass media, and health care delivery.
About the Program
The Bachelor of Science in Sociology at UHD is a 120-hour-credit program. Students will learn how societies create opportunities and perpetuate inequalities in economics, education, gender, ethnicity, and race relations; study ways in which communities develop in relation to culture, religion, and kinship; and learn about connections of social life and the emergence of a global cultural system. Graduates of the sociology degree program will demonstrate:
- The scientific method in critical analysis and problem-solving as applied to sociological issues.
- Theoretical perspectives (explanatory paradigms) of sociology.
- Key sociological concepts in describing social behavior, social forces and actions of individuals.
- Knowledge of substantive findings in subfields of sociology, such as social inequality, minority groups, deviance, family, health & illness, migration, globalization.
Affiliated Student Organizations
Pi Gamma Mu – Texas Upsilon Chapter is the UHD-chapter of the oldest and preeminent honor society in the social sciences. Its mission is to encourage and promote excellence in social science disciplines, which seek to understand and explain human behavior and social relationships. Sociology Club is open to students who have an interest in sociology and the social sciences. The club is dedicated to social responsibility, advocacy, and involvement in current issues. Students have the opportunity to participate in volunteer work throughout the community; collaborate through study groups; explore ideas for career paths within the social sciences, and utilize UHD's College of Humanities & Social Sciences advising and graduate school.
