B.A. in Philosophy Degree Sheet

The Bachelor of Arts in Philosophy focuses on building core skills that students will use throughout their undergraduate education and in their professional lives, including: critical thinking, ethics, respectful debate, analysis of arguments, and truth claims.

Philosophy majors are among the highest scorers on the Graduate Record Exam (GRE) and the Law School Admissions Test (LSAT). Not only will your horizon of knowledge be broadened, you also will develop the capacity for fine reading skills and the art of persuasive writing.

About the Program

The 120-credit hour philosophy program at UHD emphasizes both the study of major figures and movements in the history of philosophy as well as the application of philosophical ideas to social and political problems, including questions about the meaning of life. The philosophy major requirements prescribe a total of 38 semester credit hours, thus making it possible for students to incorporate a second BA major in fields such as History, Spanish, or the Humanities.

Graduates, who earn a Bachelor of Arts in Philosophy at UHD, will have the ability to:

  • Read, understand, construct, and analyze a philosophical text.
  • Conduct basic secondary research in philosophy.
  • Write a well-reasoned essay.
  • Demonstrate mastery of a general knowledge of the history of philosophy.
  • Think through perspectives other than their own.
  • Communicate and exchange ideas verbally.

The competencies above will be developed through the study of topics including: moral issues—personal and professional—logic, sport ethics, power and political philosophy, philosophy of race or gender, and film & philosophy.

Though not mandatory, students have the opportunity to specialize their studies with the addition of minors (18 hours minimum). The following are suggested minors that would complement the BA in philosophy program: History, Professional Writing, or Quantitative Methods in Research.
