Referencing People

First Reference

When you mention someone for the first time in your story, include the person’s first and last name along with a relevant occupation title. Most occupation titles are capitalized when placed before the subject’s full name. Check with the AP Stylebook when in doubt.

  • Ex. The Dateline Faculty Advisor Joe Sample joined UHD in 2010.

Second Reference

If you mention the person more than once, reference the person by last name only. Be sure to drop the person’s first name and other formal titles on second reference when referencing by last name.

  • Ex. The Dateline Faculty Advisor Joe Sample teaches technical communication courses. Sample is an avid reader.
