Kimberly Thomas has over twenty five years of financial experience in both higher education and the private sector. Ms. Thomas currently serves as the Associate Vice Chancellor for Finance and Business Services at Purdue University Northwest. Purdue University Northwest (PNW) is a regional campus in the Purdue University system. Ms. Thomas is responsible for all financial affairs and business services matters, including, but not limited to, budget, planning, accounting, risk management, external audits, procurement, contract administration, the bookstore, and dinning services operations. During her tenure at PNW she led the implementation of an incentive-based budget model, enhanced the University’s transparency and financial reporting and through collaboration with the project management team, she guided the procurement process for the construction of a new bioscience building and a Master Campus Plan update.
Prior to joining PNW, Ms. Thomas served as the Vice President of Administration and Finance at Governors State University (GSU). Reporting directly to the President, Ms. Thomas was the University's top Chief Fiscal Officer and senior advisor on all finance and administrative matters. She led a division of over a hundred staff and student assistants that make up five administrative areas and twenty departments. Her major accomplishments at GSU include the successful negotiation of faculty and staff union contracts, the 2016 recognition of the Safest Campus in Illinois and provided strong financial stewardship by leading the University through the State of Illinois unprecedented two-year budget crisis.
Ms. Thomas previously served as Associate Director of Budget and Financial Analysis at the University of Illinois at Chicago where she provided guidance for various budget processes and developed policies and guidelines for the University’s $2 billion budget. In addition, other prior financial leadership experiences in higher education include senior fiscal leadership positions at Tarrant County College in Fort Worth, Texas and at the University of South Florida. Her private sector experience include staff positions at two of the “Big Four” accounting firms, PricewaterhouseCoopers (PwC) and Klynveld Peat Marwick Goerdeler (KPMG).
Ms. Thomas is an active member of the National Association of College and University Business Officers (NACUBO) and has presented budget topics at NACUBO’s Planning and Budgeting Forum and SACUBO annual meeting. Ms. Thomas holds a Bachelor’s Degree in Business from the University of Maryland and a Master’s in Public Administration from the University of West Florida.
