Sports & Fitness offers Health and Fitness workshops to motivate healthy lifestyle changes. Stop saying and start doing! Learn how you can integrate best practices into your own lifestyle. All participants who show up to our workshops whether in person or online, will be entered in a drawing to win a prize.

Jumpstart 2021 with UHD Sports & Fitness
Missed us during welcome week? Don't worry here's your chance to get more information on UHD Sports & Fitness services. Come and learn what UHD Sports & Fitness is about. In this interactive workshop you will meet group instructors, personal trainers, massage therapist, and nutrition interns. We will have a group fitness demo, fitness assessments, and you'll learn about our sport programs available.

Lifelong Nutrition Strategies for Healthy Living
In this 60-minute workshop participants will learn how to create their very own Lifestyle Investment Plan. The plan created will encompass healthy lifestyle therapies and nutritional strategies that will effectively counteract the stressful triggers of a hectic lifestyle. Participants will also learn how to effectively integrate these life strategies into their own daily routine.

Equipment Orientation
Learn about the ins and outs of the facility, beginning with the Cardio and Selectorized machines on the second floor and finishing with the Free Weights and cardio machines.  This orientation is perfect for someone who is new to our facilities, or who wants to expand their horizons and branch out from their usual workout spot.

RAD Self Defense Program
RAD, a program of realistic, self-defense tactics and techniques, is a comprehensive course for women that begins awareness prevention, risk reduction and avoidance and progresses to the basics of hands-on defense training. Participants will learn:

  • Defense against the most common strikes.
  • Lifestyle awareness and empowerment attacks​

Zumba Valentine Party
Replace your sweets with sweat in this Valentine's Day dance party. Join UHD instructors and fall in love with fitness while dancing to your favorite songs for 90 minutes of an exhilarating workout. Wear your best red, pink, hearts and flowers and take plenty of pictures! Roses will be given away as a randomized drawing. All levels are welcome!

Integrating Mind and Body Techniques for Stress Reduction
Can a person be fit and still not well? This workshop will demonstrate the integration of mind/body practices that help persons achieve harmony within self and with those around us. Participants will learn how to combine meditation, relaxation and breathing techniques and other kinetic modes to achieve a balance in body, mind and spirit.

Supermarket Smarts and Label Reading
Too often individuals know “what" nutrition recommendations need to be implemented but they lack the information on “how" to implement these recommendations. This fun and informative workshop translates nutrition information into practice. You'll learn how to read nutrition labels and how to choose healthier food options.

Gator Painting Party
Relieve stress while helping Houston's hungry. This paint party is for UHD students, faculty and staff members to create a unique bowl that will be donated to the Houston Food Bank for a charity event in June.

Staff, faculty and student teams, organizations and departments are all invited to sign up and take part in this fun and exciting way to give back to the community. Painting takes about 45 minutes. Supplies and refreshments will be provided.

Sign up at the Student Life Center (SLC).  Event is free with a UHD ID.

Fitting in Fitness
In today's fast-paced world it can be difficult for people to incorporate exercise, and developing a fitness routine for yourself can seem daunting.  With a little knowledge about the basics and some savviness with your schedule, you can develop a routine that fits your: lifestyle, fitness level and specific goals. We'll cover the main components of a fitness routine, help you discover ways to find (and keep) your motivation, review scheduling strategies to make it easier to fit it in your busy day, and teach you quick fitness tricks of the trade so that you can get more done in less time.

Mindful vs Mindless Eating
In this experiential workshop you will learn a variety of mindfulness techniques including eating exercises, self kindness, and guided meditations that help get to the heart of physical and emotional eating challenges. You will learn how to use your body's cues to help guide your decisions to begin and stop eating, and ultimately how to eat the foods you like without guilt and without overeating. By learning how to replace self-criticism with self-nurturing, you'll gain freedom from worries about food, eating, and weight.

Ditch the Sugar Habit
An informative session that will cover what sugar does to the brain and body, how to find and avoid hidden sugars, why sugar may be contributing to your health condition, & how to curb your sugar cravings.

Drinking and Driving: DON'T MIX!
Mothers against Drunk Driving (MADD) seeks to end drunk driving, help fight drugged driving and support the victims. Come and learn about the history of MADD, MADD"s services and programs, mission moment, underage prevention, and a story from a victim/survivor.

Be the Match: Giveblood.org
An info session on how to register to save a cancer patient's life through a simple cheek swab. Be the Match is a nonprofit organization that connects cancer patients with their life saving match on the registry. Become someone's hope for a second chance at life by learning how to join the best waiting list in the world. Ethnically diverse patients have the smallest chance at finding a match! You can change that!

Mastering Meal Planning: Take the guess work out of planning
Do you struggle with knowing how to plan your meals? Are you concerned about eating too much fat or not enough protein? We've all heard different facts about nutrition out there, so it can become confusing when you're trying to practice healthy eating on your own. Learn how you should be planning your meals and snacks throughout the day to ensure you're getting the right balance of nutrients to get the most out of your meals and stay fueled throughout the day.

Plant Based Nutrition 101
How much plant-based protein do I really need? Should I start taking dietary supplements to get certain vitamins or nutrients? How can I make sure I'm eating the right balance of foods? Eating a plant-based diet is one of the best choices you can make for your health, but vegans and vegetarians often have a lot of questions about nutrition. Trying to find answers can be frustrating. Come and join our nutrition interns to get the facts about incorporating plant based foods into your nutrition.
