Alicia Ipina

Alicia Ipina is a student at the University of Houston-Downtown and has been working for UHD Sports and Fitness for two years. She is pursuing a degree in Mathematics with a concentration in Secondary Education to fulfill a career in teaching. Her love for dance is what motivated her to begin working at UHD Sports and Fitness as an instructor. She is also an office of the student organization Fandom UHD and is currently in the One UP Dance Cru at Soundbox Studios.

Ana Garza

 

Ana is a Certified BODYSHRED Instructor and student at the University of Houston – Downtown. She began her fitness journey as a dedicated BODYSHRED student and quickly progressed to teaching the classes that helped improved her fitness level. Ana's transformation has inspired her to want to share her knowledge and experience with others. She hopes to motivate, educate, and inspire in every class she teaches.

Darius Battles

Darius is a Personal Trainer and Instructor. With a background in football, track, and powerlifting, Darius has been involved in fitness for 16 years. His involvement in sports and as a fitness professional has shown him that fitness never stops and there’s always room for improvement. Darius believes that exercise is a gateway to channeling emotion whether it is stress, anger, or drive. He feels that this not only trains the body but prepares the mind to handle life’s daily issues more effectively. Darius specializes in weight training, performance, and corrective exercise.

Diana Marin

Diana is a licensed Zumba Instructor, Night Club Cardio Instructor, and a Piloxing Instructor. Diana began teaching Latin dance at age 17 and has taught ballet, modern dance, Mexican folkloric dancing, Zumba, and the art of Bollywood in Houston and Mexico City. She is a former choreographer for the Walt Disney Company and performed various genres with the Disney dancers.

Tyra Hessel


Tyra Hessel, Ph.D. is a chemistry faculty member at the University of Houston – Downtown. She is an AFAA Certified Group Fitness Instructor and has been teaching aerobics classes at UHD since 2008. Dr. Hessel has developed a unique Triple Threat class which is a 1/3 training method including step aerobics, resistance training, and ab exercises.

Daniel Cantu

Daniel Cantu is the owner of Sugarland Mixed Martial Arts. As a professional instructor, he enjoys sharing his knowledge and expertise in Gracie Jiu-jitsu and Self-Defense with his students every day. Daniel believes that empowering others to not only feel stronger but to think stronger is what his practice is truly about.

Classes Taught: Jiu-Jitsu, Self-Defense





Sophia Campos

Sophia initially received her fitness training and certification at Bally's Fitness. She has taught at various places including 24-Hour Fitness Center, Downtown YMCA, Chevron Oil & Gas, and more. She was one of the first fitness instructors at UHD when the university first began to offer aerobics more than 20 years ago.

Charlie Finch

Charlie has over 15 years of experience leading group exercise classes and providing personal training.  As the Assistant Dean for the University College at UHD, Dr. Finch has a true passion to help our students succeed. He is also the proud father of 3 boys.

Classes Taught: Step Up!





Antoinette Hagger

Antoinette is an AFAA Certified Group Exercise Instructor, Certified Body Vibe Instructor, Certified Group Power Instructor, Certified Jillian Michaels BODYSHRED Instructor, and a Certified Pop Pilates Instructor. She has experience teaching a variety of fitness classes including Boot Camp, Step Aerobics, Butts & Guts, Punch & Crunch and Kickboxing. Fitness has become a large part of her life and she has been teaching group exercise classes for over 14 years.

Classes Taught: Kickboxing, Yogalates, Power Pilates






Sandry Vergel

Sandry is a Zumba Instructor licensed to teach more formats than you could imagine. She is experienced in teaching Zumba Step, Zumba Strong, Zumba Gold, and Zumba Kids just to name a few. Sandry believes that you do not need to know how to dance to join the party. Simply follow her lead and move to the beat. Sandry's goal in every class is to provide an atmosphere that allows every student to have a blast.
