Dr. Ralf Peetz serves as Associate Provost/AVP for Undergraduate Studies and Student Success at the College Staten Island (CSI). CSI is a senior college in the City University of New York (CUNY) system. Dr. Peetz built up this new portfolio, combining offices from different divisions, focusing on the success of more than 12,000 undergraduate students. Anchoring student success as the first priority in the strategic plan, CSI focused on improving the student experience equitably and systemically. This involved reorganizations and broad curricular, workflow, and policy changes. It required building new partnerships with faculty and staff and securing significant funding support from various sources. The work has added profound meaning to the work of the CSI community, proving critical also in times of extraordinary need during COVID. Dr. Peetz draws deep satisfaction from building collaborative teams, meaningful and productive cross-institutional systems, empowering faculty and staff to support the core academic mission of a public university, and changing student lives for the better.
Dr. Peetz is a Professor of Chemistry and has been a member of the Chemistry faculty at CSI and the CUNY Graduate Center Doctoral Faculty since 2003. His areas of academic specialization include functional materials and macromolecular engineering, future energy needs, and science in education. He has published refereed articles and other papers, has been Principal Investigator or co-Principal Investigator on several significant grants, and has received numerous CUNY internal awards.
Dr. Peetz has served in various faculty leadership roles at CSI, the CUNY Graduate Center, and at the CUNY system level - including many years as Vice Chair of the CSI Faculty Senate. He has mentored high school students, undergraduate and doctoral students and researchers, and postdoctoral associates.
Dr. Peetz serves on professional and community boards, including currently as the President of the Staten Island Greenbelt Conservancy (the steward, in partnership with NYC Parks, of 2800 acres of open space, parks, trails system and public facilities in New York City and NYC’s largest public park). During the weekends, you may find Ralf and his wife, Dr. Faiza Peetz, roaming the trails with their dog. Their sons Vincent and Frederick currently attend SUNY Stony Brook University.
