A successful education in today’s global society requires a place where faculty, staff, and students feel appreciated, heard, and understood. The University of Houston-Downtown is committed to creating a safe and robust learning environment, inclusive of a variety of diverse beliefs, ethnicities, cultures, and lifestyles. We seek to create a model institution promoting inclusivity regardless of ethnic, racial, gender, sexual, and ability identifiers. With these ideals in mind, the Office of the President, in partnership with the Office of the Provost, will be launching a series of diversity, equity, and inclusion initiatives this academic year to ensure that all faculty, staff, and students feel validated, valued, and visible.
One of these initiatives follows directly from the recent announcement of UHD’s institutional membership in the National Center for Faculty Development & Diversity (NCFDD). As an institutional partner with the National Center for Faculty Development & Diversity, UHD faculty are eligible to engage in the Faculty Success Program offered by the NCFDD. The NCFDD Faculty Success Program is a 12-week, online program designed to teach tenure-track and tenured faculty the skills they need to increase both their research and writing productivity while maintaining a healthy work-life balance. The Office of the Provost, thanks to a generous investment from the Office of the President, hereby welcomes applicants to apply to participate in the NCFDD Faculty Success Program, with costs covered by the institution.
The Office of the Provost will sponsor four tenure-track/tenured faculty members to participate in the spring 2021 National Center for Faculty Development & Diversity Faculty Success Program. The dates of the program are January 17-April 10. This sponsorship will allow faculty the opportunity to work with a small cohort (3-4 people) of national peers that is led by an NCFDD-Certified Productivity Coach. Faculty participants will complete self-directed weekly modules featuring coach-guided weekly homework that is estimated to take roughly 1.5 to 2 hours per week. Successful completion of the program will result in faculty that have developed the skills, habits, and agency to increase research and writing productivity, achieve a better work-life balance, and meet personal professional goals.

All full-time tenured or tenure-track faculty in good standing at UHD are eligible to apply for this opportunity. Priority will be given to faculty members from historically underrepresented groups, and preference will be given to faculty who are still building a case for tenure. One faculty member from each college will be given this opportunity, provided she/he is a tenured or tenure-track faculty member.
To apply, please submit the following to the dean of your college: (1) a brief statement of 500-700 words describing how the Faculty Success Program will assist you with obtaining your current faculty writing, research, and personal goals; (2) a brief statement indicating how you plan to use the tools gained in the program to advance the mission and values of your department, college, and the university; and (3) a current CV. The deadline for submission to the dean is November 15, 2020. Applicants will be evaluated in each college, with the college nominee’s name forwarded to the Office of the Provost by November 30, 2020. Announcement of winners will take place on or before December 15, 2020.
