Memo: Fall 2021 COVID Caps
June 2, 2021

Dear Colleagues,

As you know, when we built the fall schedule (back in February, 2021), we did so with lowered COVID-caps in place for the on-campus classes. We noted at that time that we would collectively monitor the situation, and that we would elevate the caps for classrooms in the late spring and/or summer should conditions continue to improve. Not only have we recently experienced such improvements in COVID-19 cases at the local and state levels, but health officials and leaders expect that there will continue to be a sharp decline in new cases during the summer months.

On May 19, 2021, the COVID-19 Taskforce met and addressed the question of the COVID-based caps in the classrooms for Fall 2021. After deliberation, the taskforce sent the following recommendation to the president’s cabinet for consideration: “The Taskforce recommends lifting COVID-19 classroom caps for the Fall 2021 semester and widely communicating that decision as soon as possible to faculty, staff and students.”

The cabinet deliberated, and the president adopted the taskforce’s recommendation. Therefore, the caps for all classrooms will be reset by the Office of the Registrar to pre-COVID levels.

University Relations staff will work with Enrollment Management staff to communicate this information in an effective and comprehensive manner to students, so that they will be made aware of additional seats now being made available in Fall on-campus classes. Deans and Chairs, please work with faculty and staff to adjust the fall schedule accordingly. I would also ask that advising units in each college be informed immediately as well so that they can begin advising students accordingly.

Thank you all for your continued work to reengage our campus community this summer and fall semesters.
