Frequently Asked Questions
Once you find a position that interests you, click the blue “Apply” button on the
far right of the position title. Follow the directions on your screen to either create
a new profile or log in to your current profile if you are a returning applicant.
Applicants may view available positions online at www.uhd.edu/careers.
For consideration, applicants are required to provide a full and accurate resume or
Curriculum Vitae (CV) as well as a cover letter. Departments may require additional
documents. Examples of additional documents are transcripts, certifications, and research
statement letters of reference. If you are a veteran claiming Veteran’s Preference,
please provide your Report of Separation Form (DD214).
Applications without a resume, CV or cover letter will not be considered. Your resume
or CV should contain a brief description of your background, experience (with dates
of employment), education achievements, skills, certifications, and licenses. This
information is necessary to evaluate candidate qualifications. A cover letter is a
short introduction to the hiring manager and organization. It demonstrates your interest
in the company and/or a specific vacancy and draws attention to your resume to motivate
the reader to interview you.

Pool positions represent an ongoing need to fill certain types of positions. Applying
for pool positions makes you available for multiple job opportunities as needed. If
your experience is a good match for a current temp opening, you may be contacted by
the hiring manager for an interview. If you are interested in being considered for
positions not listed as “Temp/Pool”, you must apply directly for each position. Your
“Temp/Pool” application will not be applied to any other available positions.
No. Only job seekers who complete our online application at www.uhd.edu/careers and provide all required documents will be considered for employment.
Once you create an online profile, it will remain on file in the online system. You
may access your profile at any time by using your username and password. You can update
your profile to demonstrate your qualifications and use it to apply to specific job
postings. Please note: the same online profile can be used to apply for other positions
at other UH System universities.
You can upload your cover letter, resume or CV at the time of application. You may
also upload a new cover letter, resume or CV when you apply for a different position.
Helpful Tip: Check the “relevant file” box for each document you would like to submit
with your application. This box is located to the left of each document.
Yes. Select “Save Changes.” This saves your work without submitting the application.
The system also saves your changes each time you click “Next” as you proceed through
the application form. Note: If the position is no longer posted, you will not be able
to submit your application.
Yes. Follow the link to “Your Applications.” Locate the application you wish to withdraw.
Click the link to “Withdraw Application.” Please note: if you withdraw your application
you will not be able to re-apply for that position.
Our applicant screening process compares an applicant’s work experiences, education
and skills with the required and preferred qualifications for the position. If qualifications
are met, the application will be forwarded to the hiring department.
To check the status of your application, log in to your application profile. Please
note: we often get hundreds of applications for open positions and are not able to
make personal contact with applicants not selected to move forward in the selection
process. We follow Federal and State requirements going through the entire selection
and screening process.
Yes. Our positions are located in the heart of Downtown Houston.
Relocation is not a standard benefit offered for positions at UHD.
Phone Screens and Interviews
At UHD, the interview process starts with a phone screen/interview with the hiring
manager. For full-time faculty and executive-level positions, a search committee makes
the initial contact with a phone screen/interview.
The interview process is handled by each individual department, the hiring timeframe
may vary. Helpful Hint: If you are interviewed for a position, ask what the next steps
in the process will be, including the timeframe for filling the position. In addition,
make sure you get the name and contact information of the interviewer.

The University of Houston-Downtown utilizes E-Verify, a web-based system that allows
an employer to determine an employee’s eligibility to work in the U.S. using information
reported on an employee’s I-9. The E-Verify system confirms eligibility with both
the Social Security Administration (SSA) and the Department of Homeland Security (DHS).

Visa sponsorship is standardly not available for staff positions. Sponsorship is available
for full-time faculty positions upon approval by the Provost Office.
All employees hired at UHD will be subject to a criminal history and background check.
This process is started after a contingent job offer is extended and accepted by the
candidate. With the consent of the candidate, UHD Talent Acquisition conducts a standard
criminal history and background check through a 3rd party vendor. The standard check
includes inquiries at the county level and within the national criminal database,
as well as personal identification verification. Additional inquiries may be checked
and verified depending on the position. Some examples of these additional inquiries
are: MVR, education verification, employment verification, and university indebtedness.
Yes, we validate credentials during the selection process before an offer is made.
