Continuing Students Scholarships

CONTINUING STUDENTS:

UHD Scholarship applications for continuing full-time and part-time students are not required.

 

  • Awards are based on students' academic record and hours earned. Selection is based on student grades posted at the end of the Fall semester preceding the upcoming academic year to be awarded.
  • The General Scholarship Committee will approve candidates based on academic merit. Scholarship candidates are selected based current academic history found on our Student Record system.
  • In order to qualify for these scholarships you must have earned at least 45 credit hours from UHD and have earned no more than 85 cumulative college credit hours by the end of the Fall semester preceding the upcoming academic year.
  • May be renewable up to 1 semester – In order to receive the following Spring semester award all renewable criteria must be met. Your UHD GPA will be reviewed at the end of the Fall semester; if it drops below the minimum requirement your scholarship will be cancelled. Once award has been forfeited due to low UHD GPA (below 3.2) or because of enrollment status issues (12 or more credit hours required), award cannot be recovered in the future.
  • Candidates are not eligible to simultaneously receive another UHD Institutional renewable scholarship. However, students may receive the Red Rose Scholarship and Departmental Scholarships in addition to any of the scholarships listed in the section below.

 

UHD FULL-TIME STUDENT SCHOLARSHIP 2017/2018

JESSE H. AND MARY GIBBS JONES ENDOWMENT SCHOLARSHIP
Award
$1500 per academic year - $750 per semester
Eligibility
  • Currently enrolled at UHD or last school is UHD
  • Have earned at least 45 UHD credit hours and no more than 85 cumulative credit hours
  • Merit based
  • Minimum 3.2 UHD GPA
  • Must enroll in 12 or more UHD college credit hours each semester
  • Non-renewable

UHD PART-TIME STUDENT SCHOLARSHIP 2017/2018

BONEY SCHOLARSHIP
Award
$600 per academic year - $300 per semester
Eligibility
  • Merit Based
  • Minimum 3.2 UHD GPA
  • Have earned 45 credit hours at UHD and no more than 85 cumulative credit hours
  • Minimum enrollment of 6 hours - maximum 11 UHD college credit hours at UHD each semester
  • Non-renewable
  • No application required, candidates selected by the committee

OTHER INSTITUTIONAL SCHOLARSHIP OPPORTUNITIE​S:​

RED ROSE LEADERSHIP SCHOLARSHIP 2018/2019
Award
$3000 per academic year – ($1500 for Fall 2018 and $1500 for Spring 2019)
Eligibility

Red Rose Scholars are selected on the basis of their academic achievements, leadership ability, and their potential for contributing to the future of Houston. Red Rose Scholarship recipients must meet the following criteria:

  • Submit a complete application and essay to the Office of Scholarships and Financial Aid
  • Have earned 57 credit hours of college-level course work at the end of the Fall 2017 semester (excluding developmental coursework)
  • All transcripts from colleges previously attended must be in the UHD student record system when application is submitted
  • 24 UHD college credit hours. (UHD credits hours will be reviewed at the end of the Fall semester 2017.)
  • Cumulative UHD GPA of 3.50 or higher at the end of Fall 2017
  • Maintained a UHD GPA of 3.50 or higher at the end of the Summer 2018 to be eligible to receive this award in Fall 2018.
  • You must plan to enroll in 12 or more credit hours during the Fall 2018 and Spring 2019 semesters; (excludes developmental coursework), and
  • Enrolled in a Baccalaureate Degree Program, currently pursuing your first undergraduate degree. (PB and Graduate students are not eligible to apply.)

Urban Education Applicants will need to verify that they are participating in a student teaching program, if enrolled less than 12 college credit hours at the beginning of Fall 2018. If selected for this award, student must be enrolled in at least 9 college credit hours and must submit a verification letter from an Urban Education Advisor on the department’s letterhead no later than the end of Summer 3; failure to do so will make you ineligible to receive this award.

Social Work Applicants will need to verify that they are enrolled in Field Practicum, if enrolled less than 12 college credit hours at the beginning of Fall 2018. If selected for award, student must be enrolled from at least 10 to 11 college credit hours and must submit a verification letter from a Social Work Advisor on the department’s letterhead no later than the end of Summer 3; failure to do so will make you ineligible to receive this award.

Your graduation date will be verified through your college advisor. You must plan to graduate in May 2019 or later. Please note that you will become ineligible, if it is determined that you are graduating prior to Spring 2019.

FIFTH YEAR ACCOUNTING SCHOLARSHIP 2017/2018
Award

Initial Award per Academic Year is $6,000 (Fall $3,000/Spring $3,000) Maximum Lifetime Award $12,000 - Minimum need in a semester should be at least $3,000 or greater. Based on your Financial Aid unmet need, which is determined by submission and completion of the FAFSA

Eligibility
  • Resident of Texas; 
  • Complete and file a FAFSA application, which is available at http:www.fafsa.ed.gov/ and demonstrate financial unmet need of at least $3,000 in the semester receiving the award and $6,000 for the academic year – NOTE: student(s) will not be awarded, if unmet need is less than 1/2 the cost of attendance;
  • Must have filed an Application of Intent with the Texas State Board of Public Accountancy ($50 fee);
  • Complete an Application for the Fifth-year Accounting Student Scholarship, available below;
  • Enrolled at UHD in at least a half-time basis each semester (6 credit hours or more);
  • Satisfactory Academic Progress in the student’s program of study and meets the scholastic ability and performance standards as measured in the cumulative grade point average; not less than a 2.0 GPA
  • A cumulative grade point average that is equal to or greater than the grade point average required for graduation (equal to or greater than a 2.0);
  • Have registered for the Selective Service or are exempt from this requirement;
  • Completed at least 120 credit hours of college work, including at least 15 hours of upper level accounting;
  • Must need fewer than 30 semester hours to complete the 150 semester hours;
  • Student has not received this award in a prior year; and
  • Not taken the CPA examination in Texas or another jurisdiction.
  • Awarded student is required to reimburse the Board, on demand, for all funds the student receives from this program, if the student does not take at least one section of the CPA examination within 3 years of submitting the Application of Intent. Failure to do so will require student to reimburse the Board, on demand, for all the funds the student received from this program.

Educational requirements to take the CPA examination:

  • 150 semester hours of college credit
  • 30 semester hours of upper level accounting courses
  • 24 semester hours of upper level business courses
  • 3 semester hours of a Board-approved ethics course

Scholarship Application Process:

Step 1
Must demonstrate financial need completing the 2017/2018 FASFA and submitting a valid SAR to UHD by deadline, must have financial aid unmet need of at least $3000 remaining in unmet need for the academic year to qualify. (Not eligible if your unmet need is below the minimum requirement of $3,000 per semester and if your unmet need is less than 1/2 the cost of attendance at UHD);

Step 2
Submit an Application of Intent to take the CPA examination to the Texas State Board of Public Accountancy (applications cannot be considered until a copy of the Acknowledgement from TSBPA is submitted to the Scholarship and Financial Aid Office for review. Step 3
Submit an Application for the Fifth-year Accounting Student Scholarship Program to the College of Business Administrator to complete Section 2.

Step 4
Submit a copy of your Acknowledgement Notice from the Texas State Board of Public Accountancy, including your 5th Year Accounting Application after Sections 1 and 2 have been completed by you and the COB to the Office of Scholarships and Financial Aid.

GOOD NEIGHBOR SCHOLARSHIP PROGRAM 2017-2018
Award
One year of tuition (fall, spring, and summer).  Student is responsible for payment of institutional fees and other charges.
Eligibility
  • Be a nonresident from an eligible country;
  • Be a native-born citizen and current resident of a nation of the Western Hemisphere other than Cuba or the United States;
  • Intend to return to the eligible country upon completion of his/her program of study, not eligible if you have permanent resident status;
  • Be admitted unconditionally at an eligible public institution in Texas; and
  • Maintain satisfactory academic progress
