Celebrating National Hispanic Heritage Month

Hispanic Heritage Month is celebrated September 15 to October 15 and honors the heritage, cultures, and contributions of the American Latino community.

The celebration begins September 15 as it signifies the independence anniversary of five countries: Costa Rica, Nicaragua, El Salvador, Honduras, and Guatemala. Mexico’s Independence Day follows on September 16 and Chile’s on September 18. Additionally, many Latin and Spanish-speaking countries commemorate their indigenous people by celebrating Día de la Raza on October 12, which also falls within these 30 days of Hispanic Heritage Month.

As a Hispanic-Serving institution, the University of Houston-Downtown appreciates the cultural, political, and social impact of our diverse campus community.
