Digital signage is supported by dedicated channels that reside on a web server. A signage server and media players are used to link to the content on the web server via ‘http’. Display units are housed in various high-traffic areas around the university (at UHD’s campus in downtown Houston and at the UHD Northwest campus on HWY 249).
Adding Content to UHD Digital Signage
Content creators incorporate their content in various ways. The most popular method employs power point. Users design power point slides with content and media embedded in the slides, save the slides as jpegs, and posts the slides to the web server.
PowerPoint is not the only method, since the UHD digital signage system will take multiple file formats. Video files for Digital Signage should have a High-Definition resolution of 1920 x 1080 (1080p) or 1280 x 720 (720p). Assistance in adding content to digital signage channels is available from the Video Production and Digital Signage (VPDS) department (TTLC; Rm. A717). These file formats include:
Video: .mpg, .m2v, .wmv, .mpeg, .mp4, .mov
Flash: .swf, .flv
Image: .pps, .bmp, .ppt, .gif, .mpv, .jpg, .rm, .jpeg, .rpm, .png, .pict, .dcr
Web: .asp, .aspx, .psd, .htm, .html, .mpe (internet music)
Current Display locations (by zone) - UHD System -wide Digital Signage System
The displays listed below use networked media players to distribute content. Some displays are independent (independent zone) and feed from a single media player. Other displays are grouped together (zoned together) to feed from a single media player.
All of the players on the System-wide Digital Signage system can display shared, system-wide content. Individualized and zoned content can also be displayed in various segments of the system as indicated below.
Independent zone (can display system-wide content and can display independent content)
Zoned together (can display system-wide content and can display independent content

Content Delivery by Location:
There are several formulas currently used for delivering digital signage content:
- The Digital Signage in the
One Main, Academic, and Commerce buildings play content from the System-wide Digital
- Signage (Downtown) Channel. The content is rotating and in delivered proportional timeslots.
- The Digital Signage at the
Shea Building plays content from the System-wide Digital Signage (Downtown) Channel for
- 40 minutes out of each hour and content specific to the COB for 20 minutes out of each hour.
- The Digital Signage at the
Student Life Center plays content from the System-wide Digital Signage (Downtown) Channel
- for 40 minutes out of each hour and content specific to the Student Life Center for 20 minutes out of each hour.
- The Digital Signage at
UHD Northwest plays content from the System-wide Digital Signage (Downtown) Channel and content
- from the System-wide Digital Signage (Downtown) Channel. The content is rotating and delivered in proportional timeslots
Department Specific Display Stations (hosted and managed locally)
