Protecting the health and safety of every person at the University of Houston-Downtown (UHD) is of paramount importance, and it is a continuous work in progress. The UHD Laboratory Safety Manual (LSM) constitutes written standard operating procedures designed to ensure;

  • laboratory operations are carried out in a manner that protects all persons from harmful exposures associated with hazardous chemicals, microbial, biological and general laboratory hazards, as well as,
  • compliance with state and federal regulations.

  • General and Chemical Safety sections of this manual were taken from other safety manuals available online including one from TAMU – Arkansas.
  • Biological Safety sections were taken from the CDC's published Biosafety in Microbiological and Biomedical Laboratories Guidelines.
  •  Much of the information in the field safety section came from “Safety Guidelines for Field Research,” Office of Environment, Health & Safety, University of California, Berkeley.
