Job Summary

The Specialist, Emergency Management and Fire Safety assists in the development, coordination and administration of university emergency preparedness programs, emergency management and business continuity plans.

Provides fire and safety services to faculty, staff, students and visitors by ensuring applicable codes, regulations, policy and procedures are followed.

Duties

  • Coordinates university continuity of operations (COOP) program
  • Periodically conducts life safety inspections of interiors and exteriors of university facilities to detect fire hazards, the efficiency of fire protection systems, and adequacy of fire escapes and exits in compliance with SFMO adopted codes; prepares detailed inspection reports.
  • Assists with the development, implementation, training, exercising, and periodic review of campus emergency management plans and programs; coordinates with other university public safety programs and departments to identify gaps in training. Develops, modifies, and provides fire safety training.
  • Discusses unsafe conditions and corrective actions with the responsible party and follows up to resolve compliance problems
  • Responds to complaints regarding fire hazards and code violations; researches fire code violations and provides direction and/or technical assistance for correction
  • Attends pre-construction/construction meetings, reviews fire protection plans and building plans for applicable code compliance, advises of required changes, and approves completed plans.
  • Serves as university liaison with the State of Texas Fire Marshal Office (SFMO) and Houston Fire Department (HFD) concerning fire safety;
  • Maintains records of university fire alarms and provides reports to SFMO; participates in HFD building surveys and maintains Fire Depository Boxes and lockboxes

Qualifications

Required Education:

  • N/A

•Associate Degree or above. Preferred areas of study: Fire Science, Emergency Management, Public Administration or a closely related field •Experience and education may be substituted

  • None

Required Experience:

  • Minimum of five (5) years of experience

License/Certification:

  • NIMS/ICS 100, 200, 700 and 800

Preferred Qualifications

  • Bachelors Degree
  • ICS 300 and 400,
  • CPR/First Aid Instructor,
  • EMT or higher,
  • TCFP or NFPA Fire Inspector I and II,
  • TCFP or NFPA Plans Examiner I

  • Work is normally performed in a typical interior work environment which does not subject the employee to any unpleasant elements, however, work may involve moderate exposure to dust, dirt, loud noises, electrical systems and chemicals
  • Position is physically comfortable; individual has discretion about sitting, walking, standing, etc. Occasional lifting (45lbs), carrying (25lbs) , pushing (25lbs) and pulling(25lbs)Occasional climbing, balancing, stooping and crouching
