Job Summary

The HVAC Mechanic II assists with maintaining and repairing all aspects of heating, ventilation, air conditioning, and refrigeration equipment for the university. The Mechanic assists with installing new heating and air conditioning systems, components, and piping, according to specifications and code.

Duties

  • Maintains the operation of chiller plant and associated equipment
  • Maintains and services air handling units
  • Maintains operation of boiler plant
  • Collects and analyzes water samples from heating and chilled water loops
  • Maintains boilers, cooling towers, and fan coils
  • Repairs ductwork systems; monitors building automation system and implements building A/C schedules as needed
  • Orders parts for air handlers, boilers, fan coils, ice machines, and kitchen equipment
  • Maintains air handler checking belts
  • Maintains the correct humidity level and temperature in the Art Gallery
  • Performs any necessary administrative work, including processing invoices and monitoring inventory; participates in HVAC Projects as required

Qualifications

Required Education:

  • High School Diploma or equivalent

Required Experience:

  • Minimum of five (5) years of related job experience

License/Certification:

  • Must maintain a valid, current driver's license
  • TDLR HVAC License is required

Knowledge, Skills and Abilities

Knowledge:

  • Knowledge of an Automated Logic Building Automation System (not Telecommunications);
  • Knowledge of the operations of HVAC systems and the related trends, issues, and accepted practices

Skills:

  • Good technical skills, including proficiency in MS Office and PeopleSoft;
  • Strong analytical and problem-solving skills; excellent interpersonal and communication skills

Abilities:

  • Ability to make repairs to HVAC and kitchen equipment;
  • Ability to monitor contractors; ability to fit pipes; ability to design and calculate tonnage loads;
  • Ability to effectively communicate with a wide range of individuals and constituencies in a diverse community

Work Location and Physical Demands

Primary Work Location:

  • Works in some or all of the following areas: technology server room, computer laboratory, science laboratory, classroom, training room, auditorium, outdoor areas, gymnasium or other physical training rooms, kitchen, dining areas, cafeteria, machine shop, carpentry shop, and attics
  • May include working in tunnels and/or tight spaces

Physical Demands:

  • Employee will be exposed to normal hazards of construction, demolition, and facilities operations. Work involves some exposure to elements, such as adverse weather conditions, extreme temperatures, oils, dirt, dust, fumes, and airborne particles
  • Position requires maintaining physical condition necessary for sitting, standing, or walking for prolonged periods of time, as well as for bending, stooping, kneeling, crawling, jumping, climbing, and frequent reaching
  • May be exposed to moving mechanical parts, potentially hazardous or cancer-causing agents or chemicals, or the risk of electric shock
  • May be required to work in confined spaces or a high, dangerous place
  • May be exposed to vibration or the loud noise of chillers, boiler equipment, and water pumps
  • Must have precise hand-eye coordination, good spatial awareness, and the ability to identify and distinguish colors
  • Must have the ability to move items of up to 100lbs
  • Will be required to be on call 24 hours a day for HVAC related incidents
  • May driver the university vehicle
