How do I apply for a position?
Once you find a position that interests you, click the blue “Apply” button on the far right of the position title.  Follow the directions on your screen to either create a new profile or log in to your current profile if you are a returning applicant.

Where do I go to view job postings and apply for positions?
Applicants may view available positions online at www.uhd.edu/careers

What application documents will I need before I apply?
For consideration, applicants are required to provide a full and accurate resume or Curriculum Vitae (CV) as well as a cover letter.  Departments may require additional documents.  Examples of additional documents are transcripts, certifications, and research statement letters of reference.  If you are a veteran claiming Veteran’s Preference, please provide your Report of Separation Form (DD214).

What if I don’t have a formal resume, CV, or cover letter to attach to my application?
Applications without a resume, CV or cover letter will not be considered.
Your resume or CV should contain a brief description of your background, experience (with dates of employment), education achievements, skills, certifications, and licenses.  This information is necessary to evaluate candidate qualifications.   A cover letter is a short introduction to the hiring manager and organization.  It demonstrates your interest in the company and/or a specific vacancy and draws attention to your resume to motivate the reader to interview you.

Should I send samples of my work (portfolio, writing, code, instructional designs, etc) with my resume or CV?
Only if requested to do so.  If you are selected for an interview, you may be asked to present  work samples for at that time.

I wanted to apply for a position that I saw online, but now it is no longer listed.  May I still apply?
We regularly post new positions and remove positions that are no longer available.  If a job is no longer posted on our site, we are no longer accepting applications for it.

What is a “Temporary Staff” (pool position)?  How is a pool position different from other job announcements?
Pool positions represent an ongoing need to fill certain types of positions.  Applying for pool positions makes you available for multiple job opportunities as needed.  If your experience is a good match for a current temp opening, you may be contacted by the hiring manager for an interview.
If you are interested in being considered for positions not listed as “Temp/Pool”, you must apply directly for each position. Your “Temp/Pool” application will not be applied.

Can I apply directly to the hiring department?
No. Only job seekers who complete our online application at www.uhd.edu/careers and provide all required documents will be considered for employment.

Do I need to create a completely new application for each job posting?
Once you create an online profile, it will remain on file in the online system.  You may access your profile at any time by using your username and password.  You can update your profile to demonstrate your qualifications and use it to apply to specific job postings.  Please note: the same online profile can be used to apply for other positions at other UH System universities.

How do I upload or update my cover letter, resume or CV for specific positions?
You can upload your cover letter, resume or CV at the time of application.  You may also upload a new cover letter, resume or CV when you apply for a different position.
Helpful Tip:  Check the “relevant file” box for each document you would like to submit with your application. This box is located to the left of each document.

If I didn’t finish my application, can I save it and complete it at a later date?
Yes.  Select “Save Changes.”  This saves your work without submitting the application.  The system also saves your changes each time you click “Next” as you proceed through the application form.

Can I withdraw my application for a specific job posting after I have submitted it?
Yes. Follow the link to “Your Applications.” Locate the application you wish to withdraw.  Click the link to “Withdraw Application.”  Please note: if you withdraw your application you will not be able to re-apply for that position.

How does the applicant screening process work?
Our applicant screening process compares an applicant’s work experiences, education and skills with the required and preferred qualifications for the position. If qualifications are met, the application will be forwarded to the hiring department.

I submitted my resume, but haven’t heard for the University of Houston-Downtown yet.  What is the status of my application?
To check the status of your application, log in to your application profile. Please note: we often get hundreds of applications for open positions and are not able to make personal contact with applicants not selected to move forward in the selection process.  We follow Federal and State requirements going through the entire selection and screening process.

Where are you located?  Do I have to move to Texas to work at the University of Houston-Downtown?
Our positions are located in the heart of Downtown Houston.

Will you assist me with relocation?
Relocation is not a standard benefit offered for positions at UHD.

Phone Screens and Interviews

What is your interview process?
At UHD, the interview process starts with a phone screen/interview with the hiring manager.  For full-time faculty and executive-level positions, a search committee makes the initial contact with a phone screen/interview.

How long do you take to make a hiring decision?
Because the interview process is handled by each individual department, the hiring timeframe may vary.
Helpful Hint:  If you are interviewed for a position, ask what the next steps in the process will be, including the timeframe for filling the position.  In addition,  make sure you get the name and contact information of the interviewer for follow-up contact.

How can I view the salary for a position?
You can view the salary for Staff positions on our ESO webpage under Compensation.
https://www.uhd.edu/administration/employment-services-operations/compensation/Pages/hr-compensation.aspx

Yes.  We offer an attractive and competitive benefits package.  Visit our benefits page to review all the details.  Benefits Home Page

What is E-Verify?
The University of Houston-Downtown utilizes E-Verify, a web-based system that allows an employer to determine an employee’s eligibility to work in the U.S. using information reported on an employee’s I-9.  The E-Verify system confirms eligibility with both the Social Security Administration (SSA) and the Department of Homeland Security (DHS).  For more information, please visit the USCIS E-Verify website.

I need a work permit to work in the United States,  Will you sponsor me?
Visa sponsorship is standardly not available for staff positions.  Sponsorship is available for full-time faculty positions upon approval by the Provost Office.

Does the University of Houston- Downtown conduct criminal history and background checks?
All employees hired at UHD will be subject to a criminal history and background check.  This process is started after a contingent job offer is extended and accepted by the candidate.  With the consent of the candidate, UHD Talent Acquisition conducts a standard criminal history and background check through a 3rd party vendor.  The standard check includes inquiries at the county level and within the national criminal database, as well as personal identification verification.  Additional inquiries may be checked and verified depending on the position. Some examples of these additional inquiries are: MVR, education verification, employment verification, and university indebtedness.

Do you validate credentials?
Yes, we validate credentials during the selection process before an offer is made.
