Scope of Responsibilities

As Dean of UHD's University College, Dr. Birchak provides leadership to the University College, which involves managing the Center for Teaching and Learning Excellence, University Honors Program, Title V: Student Transition and Retention (STAR) Program, Supplemental Instruction Program, Bachelor of Interdisciplinary Studies Degree Program, Bachelor of Applied Arts and Sciences in Applied Administration Program, Talent Search and Upward Bound. Her responsibilities also include overseeing a variety of enhancement initiatives, including the Freshman Summer Success Program and the Connections Mentoring Program. Dr. Birchak's additional responsibilities include developing the College's budget reports and requests, coordinating the development of the College's strategic plan, writing grant proposals and serving as Principal Investigator on external grants as well as serving as a member of the President's Executive Council. Additionally, she works closely with Student Affairs on student success programming, serves as a member of the Planning and Budget Development Committee and coordinates the assessment and development of two academic programs. Dr. Birchak also chairs the Quality Enhancement Plan (QEP) Steering Committee and builds partnerships in support of interdisciplinary initiatives.
Educational Qualifications

Dr. Birchak earned her Doctor of English from the University of Houston, Master of English from Wayne State University and Bachelor of Science in English from the University of Houston.
Professional Experience
Dr. Birchak has been in her current position as Dean of the University College for 10 years. She has extensive experience with teaching high school and community college English. This experience assisted her with an increased understanding of high school transition programs when she transitioned to UHD. Currently, Dr. Birchak teaches online courses in technical communication and presents peer-reviewed papers at international, national and regional conferences on technology. Prior to her current position, Dr. Birchak served as the Director of Professional Writing Degree Program at UHD as well as an Associate Dean of the College of Humanities and Social Sciences.
