Scope of Responsibilities
At UHD, Dr. Tamez is responsible for exploring appropriate and reasonable academic adjustments and accommodations for students with disabilities as a means to equalize their access to success at UHD. Dr. Tamez also helps students develop and/or increase their independence and self-advocacy skills; develop program services, policies, and procedures that support students with disabilities and troubleshoot common departmental problems that arise. She currently manages the Office of Disability Services, which includes 2 full time staff and 6 student workers.
Dr. Tamez earned her Doctor of Philosophy in Counselor Education and Supervision from The Pennsylvania State University; Master of Arts in Counseling from Prairie View A&M University and Bachelor of Arts in Sociology from Texas A&M University. Her certifications include: National Certified Counselor.
Meritza Tamez has worked with people with disabilities in a variety of aspects for 10+ years. In her current position, she assist students with disabilities to enhance their independence and self-advocacy skills, as well as explore appropriate academic adjustments and accommodations that will equalize their access to success at UHD. Prior to this role, Dr. Tamez worked with adults and veterans with disabilities through the Department of Assistive and Rehabilitative Services and Veterans Administration to assist with developing individualized academic and employment plans.
