FAQ About COVID-19 Vaccine

Can the university require the COVID-19 vaccine?

No, as the vaccine has only been approved on an emergency basis it cannot be required.

Does the university require proof of vaccination for any reason or can a supervisor request proof of vaccination for any reason?

No, the vaccine will not be required by the university under any circumstance and will not be expected as part of the process of returning to work nor will it be a condition of employment.

Can the University recommend the COVID-19 vaccine?

Yes, the University can recommend and encourage individuals to strongly consider getting the vaccine. UHD Faculty, staff and students are encouraged to get vaccinated. Visit our Vaccine Information page to learn more about how to get vaccinated

If the university offers COVID-19 vaccines, is the information gathered confidential?

Yes, this would be protected health information.

As a supervisor, may I ask who has had the COVID-19 vaccine?

No, you should not ask whether any employee has had the vaccine.

What if an employee tells me they have received it, can I share that information?

No, you should not share that information.

What if an employee tells me they will not get the vaccine, can I share that information?

No, you should not share that information.

Will I know if my co-workers or students are vaccinated? Can I or should I ask?

You will only know if they tell you directly. You should not ask for personal health information from co-workers or students.

If I get the COVID-19 vaccine, do I need to be tested or quarantine if I am exposed to someone with COVID-19?

If you have been fully vaccinated, you would only need to be tested or quarantine if you are exhibiting symptoms of COVID-19. CDC indicates you are fully vaccinated when it is more than 2 weeks following receipt of the second dose in a two dose series or more than 2 weeks following receipt of one dose in a single-dose vaccine and it has not been longer than 3 months from the time you received the last dose in the series.

Can I require (or invite) only vaccinated employees to attend in-person meetings?

No, you cannot limit in-person meetings to those that are vaccinated.

If I choose not to be vaccinated, can I continue to work remotely?

No, the decision not to be vaccinated has no bearing on whether one works remotely.

Do I still need to wear a face covering on campus if I have received the COVID-19 vaccine?

Face coverings and/or masks are no longer required at UHD per Governor Abbott’s Executive Order #36​​.   For those who prefer to wear face coverings and/or masks, they may certainly continue to do so. UHD encourages unvaccinated people to wear face coverings.  We also strongly encourage our students, faculty, and staff to get vaccinated

Will I need to show proof of taking the COVID-19 vaccine to attend university events?

No, the university will not ask any student or employee or guest if they have been vaccinated.

Can I get time off work to get the COVID-19 vaccine?

Yes, employees should use sick leave for time off from work to get the vaccine as well as if you do not feel well enough to return to work after receiving the vaccine or if you experience symptoms of COVID-19.

Once I am fully vaccinated, am I still encouraged to have a COVID-19 test frequently especially when I am on campus?

No, you will not need to be tested unless you are experiencing COVID-19 symptoms.
