Monday thru Thursday, June 17-20, 2019, Dr. Cynthia Maye, Sonia Jordan, Terri Gordon, and Dianna Hernadez conducted a 3D Printing workshop, at the University of Houston-Downtown, for Upward Bound students. The workshop facilitated students working on a highlevel thinking and real ScienceTechnology, Engineering & Math (STEM) activities connected to the TEKS and career and college readiness (CCR) standards.

Students applied proportional reasoning to the process of 3D modeling to create a scale model of an object that describes a personal character trait. Attendees were actively engaged in designing models from scratch or importing more intricate models to use as a starting point. Upon completion of the modifications, students watch their Workshop participants explored the creation come to life layer-by-layer.

Workshop participants explored the creation come to life layer-by-layer. world of 3D Printing and learned the process by designing their own 3D models. This hands-on course allows students to design simple 3D models and prepare them for production usingcomputer-aided design (CAD) software. Students began with general safety precautions of 3D printers, which included filament, and  extruder maintenance.

3D Printing is an emerging technology that uses an extruder, which acts similar to a hot glue gun. Plastic filament is fed in through the top, is melted at 215℃, and finally is “extruded” out of a small nozzle into the layers that build a 3D object. 3D printers know where to move using a three dimensional cartesian coordinate system which defines every point of a 3D model with a unique position along the X, Y, and Z axes. The coordinates are fed to the printer from an electronic file.

Additional activities included the use of 3D pens for prototyping and creating simple circuits, using conductive tape and LED lights. The circuit enabled students to evaluate possibilities of adding electronics to their 3D design. The four day workshop enabled students to evaluate and redesign their projects to perfection. Lastly, during the workshop wrap-up, the instructors moderated
discussions of student’s reflection on the entire process of design, discussing the successes and challenges experienced during the 3D modeling process.
