The BAAS in Applied Administration with a concentration in Applied Public Administration and Leadership (BAAS-AA-APAL) will be offered to students in Summer 2020 as part of the Texas Affordable Baccalaureate Grant (TAB) program.  This new concentration is an addition to the existing BAAS-AA degree program based in UHD’s University College and is aimed at bolstering the skills and knowledge of those serving the public sector. This concentration is targeted toward seasoned professionals with extensive career experience who have not completed their undergraduate degrees. It will be an asset to those seeking to elevate their careers to administrative positions and other supervisory roles that require a university degree.

Through a competency-based curriculum, students will have opportunities to accelerate their education and quickly complete college credits. Competency-based coursework will be structured through strategic learning outcomes. Students who demonstrate a mastery of principles and skills outlined in these outcomes can advance through the program in a timely manner and progress in their careers.

The BAAS-AA-APAL was developed following research and consultation with employees from the Houston Police Department, Houston Fire Department, Houston Port Authority, The City of Houston and other organizations. It is the only TAB sponsored degree located in a major urban setting that addresses public sector workforce needs in the Greater Houston region and throughout the state.

Students with a AAS from an accredited community college and 3 years minimum work experience in public administration can earn the BAAS-AA-APAL degree by completing 2-3 BAAS-AA and APAL courses each 8-week term.  Students will pay a flat tuition rate for each 8-week term and will benefit from no cost to low cost textbooks.  Students transferring an AAS degree to the program will also need to complete any remaining Texas Core (General Education) courses either at UHD or the community college of their choice.

Through a UHD-HCC partnership, students will have the opportunity to seamlessly transfer from HCC’s AAS in business management into UHD’s BAAS-AA-APAL, or complete both degrees through joint admissions.
