Directions & Other Important Info
The 2018 UHD Teaching & Learning Symposium will be held in the ACAD 300 events area (White Oak Bayou, Buffalo Bayou, & Houston Rooms) next to the cafeteria and the campus Starbucks. ACAD 300 is on the "ground floor" on the south side of the building (overlooking downtown), but it's actually the third level of the One Main / Academic / Girard Street Building complex (indicated by the number 1 on this map). Feel free to print this handy PDF version of the contents of this page in advance of the event.
Visitor Parking Garage (Free for First 40 Vehicles)
Will you be driving to UHD to attend the event? Point your GPS to 201 Girard Street, Houston,TX 77002. From downtown, take Travis Street north. Turn right onto Girard to enter campus. Do not go under breezeway to Main Street: instead, take first immediate right to go up and enter Visitor Parking. This is the Welcome Center parking garage. You're entering the garage marked with a #6 on this campus map. Take a parking entry ticket and hang on to it (you'll need it when you exit…). If the parking attendant is in the booth, please give them your name and let them know you are here from another institution to attend the Teaching & Learning Symposium. They will have a list of outside visitors. Park, and take elevator to 3rd floor to Welcome Center in Girard Street Building. Enter Welcome Center and follow signs to the Academic Building (not the One Main Building and not the Girard Street Building). Once you're on the third floor of the Academic Building, head to the south side of the building. There will be signage directing you to the event space (ACAD 300). Because of the limited free parking, we urge you to carpool with a colleague or two.
The first floor of Visitor Parking has been reserved for outside visitors; however, there are only 40 spots, and those will fill on a first come, first served basis. We will cover your parking for these spots only. If you arrive after the garage is full, you will need to park in paid parking areas elsewhere on or near campus. There is metered parking just across the street (under I-10). There is also paid parking on Commerce Street next to the former Spaghetti Warehouse. See directions above and below for finding the event space. If you get lost, ask a student or anyone else you encounter for help: we're all very friendly over here! Most people can tell you where the cafeteria and Starbucks are, and we're right next door to them!
Taking the light rail to campus? Get on the red line and head north from downtown. Exit at the University of Houston-Downtown stop. Enter the One Main Building, go down the hall (past the bookstore and past the student services customer service windows), turn left, enter the Academic Building, and follow the directional signage to the event space (ACAD 300).
Arriving at the Event
Follow the directional signage just outside the event space on the third floor of the Academic Building to the White Oak Bayou Room entry to ACAD 300. Once you're there, go directly to the Welcome Table to check in, collect your materials (name badge, event bag, etc.), and, if you've parking in visitor parking, be sure to sign for a parking voucher to be able to exit the Welcome Center garage without having to pay. Again, there are only 40 spots in the Welcome Center garage, and those will be taken on a first come, first served basis. So, arrive early, or be prepared to pay for parking at the metered lots around campus (see Overflow Parking section above). Unfortunately, there will be no vouchers issued to those not arriving early enough to park in the Visitor Parking garage. When you arrive at the Welcome Table, be sure to let us know if you are an HAFD (Houston Area Faculty Developers) member or a UHD/UHCL ACUE Participant, too!
