I enjoy teaching and have been devoted to excellence in teaching. During my teaching career, I have taught a wide range of courses in computer science, mathematics, and statistics. I always feel that it is my primary objective to provide students with the best possible education. I believe that to be a successful teacher, in addition to enthusiasm and knowledge of the subject, one must motivate students and arouse their interest in the subject matter, deliver the materials in an effective way, and insist on high standards, while meeting each student's individual needs.

I have also actively engaged in research to discover and to generate new knowledge with the intent of advancing one's discipline. Every university professor should remain current in the areas of expertise with the intent of providing the students the latest development in the discipline. I also believe that research topics should address fundamental theory and important application problems in the discipline. Excellence in my research is evidenced by the significant contribution to the discipline and the recognition of the professional community. In addition, research should make a great impact on the teaching and graduate high-quality students who can pursue their studies in the discipline.

​​Dr. Xie taught Freshman and Sophomore level math courses. He has extensive professional experience in the field. He published several articles, received one award, and received several NSF grants. Dr. Xie served as a Teaching/Research Assistant at Texas Tech University from 1984 to 1990 and as a Lecturer at Shanghai Institute of Education from 1982 to 1984. He received an Award for Excellence in Scholarly/Creativity from the UH-Downtown in 2003.​​​
