Dr. Vida Robertson Visits the Westbury Christian School
Dr. Vida Robertson visited the Westbury Christian School campus Thursday, April 28 and Friday, April 29 for our annual Westbury Christian College Day event. As a result, he introduced the seniors to a college class experience. The students prepared for this event by reading the following materials: "Father and Son" by Langston Hughes, "White Privilege" by Peggy McIntosh, "Let America Be America Again" by Langston Hughes and "Racial Formations" by Michael Omi and Howard Winant.
Dr. Robertson challenged the students to interrogate their notion of race through a better and deeper understanding of the college level texts. The students were excited to learn from Dr. Robertson, as he has a unique teaching style that encourages both learning and class participation, as demonstrated by the packed classroom and an eagerness to continue the class discussion. His introduction to racial construction and college level critical thinking is a part of UHD's Center for Critical Race Studies ongoing commitment to the study and empowerment of Houston's ethnic communities.
