Frequently Asked Questions

Parking and Transportation Services (PTS) would like to thank those faculty, staff and students who participated in the Fall 2016 UHD Shuttle Bus Service survey.  Your feedback has been very helpful to us.

Plans are being developed to ensure all comments and suggestions are addressed so that you, the customer, will see a positive change in the shuttle service program.

The “Frequently Asked Questions” section below has been developed partly in response to your feedback, as well as other general questions and concerns communicated to the PTS Office. The PTS Office would like to provide insights to UHD’s parking operation that may clarify many of the concerns our university community has about UHD campus parking.

"Where can I catch the UHD shuttle bus on campus and what buildings and lots do they service?"

  • The Bayou Express shuttle departs from the Daly Street lot:
    • First stop is the METRO stop located at the corner of Main and Naylor
    • Second stop is the One Main/Academic Building on Girard Street, in front of the UHD Police Department
    • Returns to the Daly Street Lot
  • The Gator Line services the College of Business Shea Building, College of Public Service Commerce Building and the One Main/Academic Building.
The shuttle departs from the Daly Street Lot:
    • First stop is the METRO stop located at the corner of Main and Naylor
    • Second stop is the METRO stop located at the corner of Fannin and Commerce
    • Third stop is the One Main/Academic Building on Girard Street, in front of the UHD Police Department

"May I request a stop at any point on the route?"

For safety reasons the UHD shuttle bus will not stop anywhere other than a designated UHD shuttle bus stop.

“Can I flag down the bus if I am not at a UHD bus stop?”

For safety reasons the UHD shuttle bus will not stop anywhere other than a designated UHD shuttle bus stop.

"How do the UHD shuttle buses accommodate individuals with disabilities?"

All UHD shuttle buses are ADA compliant and are wheelchair accessible.  We work closely with the Office of Disability Services and Employment Services and Operations to assist anyone that may require accommodations.

"I was late for my class. What can be done about that?"

Students need to make sure they arrive to their stop early.  Trains and traffic often cause delays and are out of the university’s control.  Arriving early also helps to better spread the capacity of students on each bus.

“Change the placement of the Shea Street stop.”

For the safety of all passengers, UHD shuttle bus stops are located at designated METRO bus stops.  Passengers riding the shuttle bus to the College of Business Shea Building would prefer a stop at the steps located on the side entrance of the building; however, a UHD shuttle bus stop at this location would then require the bus driver to maneuver from the far right lane to the far left lane, impeding traffic, to make the left turn to access the Daly Street Lot.  The current stop for the Shea Building is located at the northwest corner of Main and Naylor facing downtown.  This is the most efficient and safe stop available with the current street configuration on Main Street.

“Put another bus stop next to the Commerce Street Building.”

For the safety of all passengers, UHD shuttle bus stops are located at designated METRO bus stops.  The current UHD shuttle bus stop for the Commerce Building is located at the northwest corner of Fannin and Commerce.  It is the most efficient option for a shuttle bus stop because it has access to the safest pedestrian crosswalk leading to the building. Upon crossing the street, the ramp leading to the front entrance of the building can be accessed from the southwest corner of the intersection.  Stopping in front of the Commerce Building would impede traffic at an already congested Commerce and Main Street intersection.

“How frequently do the shuttle buses run from other downtown locations?”

The UHD shuttle bus service only provides rides to and from UHD campus buildings and UHD-owned and leased parking lots.  UHD shuttle buses run approximately 10 - 15 minutes in between routes.  All UHD shuttle buses are equipped with real time GPS tracking system designed to provide you with an estimated time of arrival of the next shuttle bus.  You can download the mobile app ETA SPOT to your mobile device from the Apple Store or Google Play. ETA SPOT can be also be accessed via desktop at UHD.ETASPOT.NET.

“Please check the parking meters. At least every other week they’re out of paper.”

The parking meters are part of the City of Houston parking operations.  For City of Houston parking meters not operating properly, please contact 713-837-0311 or www.houston311.org.

“I wish there was a quicker route to access the main building.”

With the growth of the City of Houston, the Metro light rail was brought to the downtown area to provide relief to the congested downtown streets.  With a light rail stop at our university front door, light rail tracks, as well as two-way traffic prohibit an unloading zone on the Main Street Bridge.  The Girard Street shuttle bus stop provides safe and easy access to and from the One Main Building.

“Pick up people from the garage on Vine Street.”

There is not a pedestrian exit from the Vine Street Garage enabling students to safely exit the garage to access a bus stop.  Warning labels are placed on gate boxes informing customers of the danger of walking under the gate arms.

"Can staff ride the shuttles also?"

All university faculty, staff, students and visitors are welcome to ride the UHD shuttle buses.
