On January 26, 2015, the U.S. District Court for the Southern District of Texas-Houston Division ruled that a portion of the Hazlewood Act was unconstitutional. That provision requires veterans to have been a Texas resident at the time they entered military service in order to receive exemptions of tuition and fees at Texas public institutions of higher education.
The office of the Attorney General is currently reviewing the decision and may appeal the ruling. In the interim, current Hazlewood eligibility requirements remain unchanged pending appeal and legislative action, except for the individual specifically named in the lawsuit.
UHD Veterans Services assists veterans, reservists, guardsmen, and dependents of disabled or deceased veterans of the U.S. Armed Forces. Over 500 veterans are currently pursuing a degree at UH-Downtown.
Veterans Services ensures that proper paperwork is completed, certified, and filed with the Department of Veterans Affairs so that payment of education benefits can begin. Veterans Services does not, however, determine eligibility for benefits.
Before receiving approval of your benefits please click the Getting Started link to ensure your certification is done in a timely manner.
The University of Houston-Downtown's Veterans Services Department is dedicated to helping the men and women of the U.S. Armed Forces achieve the American dream of becoming highly successful.
