Erik Ibarra is a UHD alum with drive, so to speak. After graduating in December 2007 with a bachelor's degree in marketing, he started an eco-friendly personal driving service in Houston and has watched the business take off.
"The idea for my business, REV, started while I was attending UHD," Ibarra said. "I was at opening day for the Houston Astros and thought how much easier it would be if people could use golf carts to travel around downtown rather than cabs or pedicabs."
Slowly but surely, Ibarra created a business plan, conducted extensive research and fine-tuned his plans. He quit his post-college job in sales to devote all his time and resources to REV, a decision that was risky but eventually paid off.
Today, the company boasts four electric vehicles, or eco-shuttles, offers memberships for repeat customers and supplies drivers with credit card swipers and iPod touches like those found in Apple stores. The company is also working to produce an app for smart phone.
"We are growing and I'm excited to see what's next for us," Ibarra said.
While Ibarra has always been savvy, he credits some of his business sense to his experience at UHD. Before he officially enrolled in classes at UHD, Ibarra emailed a professor asking permission to audit a class. This one class gave him the confidence he needed to pursue a degree and cultivate his interest in business and marketing.
Ibarra said. "I was working while I was attending school and it was so beneficial to me because I could learn theories in the classroom and then go to my job and put those theories into practice."
Ibarra, like so many UHD students, turned his experience at UHD into a major opportunity.
