| The University of Houston-Downtown is changing its name.
Welcome to the Web site where you can stay up-to-date
with the
most
current information about a new name for UHD.
UHD has grown in role and scope since it was founded in 1974. It has evolved from a narrowly defined open access institution with limited degree programs, to a full-service baccalaureate degree-granting institution with 41 concentrations and select graduate degrees that respond to community needs.
Today UHD's reach and mission extend far beyond Houston's downtown business district. The argument can be made that having "Downtown" as an extension to the University's name indicates that it is "a branch campus" or a "satellite center" instead of an independent, separately accredited and funded state university.
UHD also offers degree programs at Lone Star College-Cy Fair, LSC-Kingwood, The University Center in the Woodlands, and at UH-System facilities at Cinco Ranch.
Some 47 percent of UHD's students live outside of Beltway 8.
On December 19, 2008, the UH System Board of Regents passed a resolution to change UHD's name.
This Web site is designed to share information about what the new name will be.
A name change for UHD would have to be approved by the Board of Regents and the Texas Legislature.
