Name Selection Guidelines

• Must reflect UHD today and its perceived future.

• Must be unique in Texas and in the United States.

• Must be distinctive. This means that is cannot be too similar to an existing institution’s name.

• Must not include person’s name or a family name. § §Must not include “University of Houston,” or be so similar to the “University of Houston” that it would cause confusion.

• Must support the mission, focus and purpose of the institution.

• Must have an available internet domain.

• Must have an acronym or preferred abbreviation that is distinct and appropriate.

• Must be short, easy to use and easily abbreviated.

• Must reflect the institution’s image as a successful, high quality, inclusive, diverse, comprehensive state university.

• May link to the region’s geography, history or location.

• Should be inspiring and forward-thinking, but not faddish.
