| Name Selection Guidelines

Must reflect UHD today and its perceived future.

Must be unique in Texas and in the United States.

Must be distinctive. This means that is cannot be too similar to an existing institution’s name.

Must not include person’s name or a family name. § §Must not include “University of Houston,” or be so similar to the “University of Houston” that it would cause confusion.

Must support the mission, focus and purpose of the institution.

Must have an available internet domain.

Must have an acronym or preferred abbreviation that is distinct and appropriate.

Must be short, easy to use and easily abbreviated.

Must reflect the institution’s image as a successful, high quality, inclusive, diverse, comprehensive state university.

May link to the region’s geography, history or location.

Should be inspiring and forward-thinking, but not faddish.
