In this Writers in the Schools (WITS) workshop, students will explore the things that inspire them. As a community of writers, we’ll focus on how to turn these inspirations into pieces of poetry, short stories, memoir, and essays. By writing and reading daily, we’ll discuss what makes writing succeed, and we’ll use these prompts to help us put our own thoughts down on the blank page. Using the college creative writing workshop as a model, students will help peer review each other’s work in a supportive environment, and we’ll spend a lot of time learning the tools of strong revision. At the end of the workshop, parents and family will be invited to hear students read their favorite pieces, and students will leave with a small portfolio of their collected work.
