Dear Faculty and Staff:
On the heels of a recent incident on campus, I want to reach out to all of you to underscore our University's commitment to diversity and tolerance.
A UHD student found a highly defamatory flyer on campus that targeted another student and the GLBT community at UHD. Our university has a zero tolerance policy when it comes to discrimination of any kind on our campus. Diversity is a cornerstone of UHD and one of our great strengths. We are one of the most diverse universities in the nation and we fully support each of our students, staff, and faculty regardless of ethnicity, gender, or sexual orientation.
The University has launched an official criminal investigation into this incident, which is ongoing. I have complete confidence that Chief Boyle and his team will take all possible measures to thoroughly investigate this matter. At the conclusion of the investigation, I assure you that we will take appropriate action.
One of the primary reasons I chose to come to UHD was its culture of tolerance and diversity. We cannot take that culture for granted, but must work diligently to preserve and strengthen it. We have scheduled a "Safe Zone" session to reinforce UHD's culture of civility, tolerance, and diversity and to provide a venue for campus-wide education and discussions. I invite all of you to attend. The session will be held this next Thursday, March 28 from 2:00 to 3:00 p.m. in the Special Events Center (A-300), Buffalo Bayou Room.
I know that we will come together in the wake of this incident and emerge a stronger, more united University community. I thank you for all you do to promote understanding and respect within our community.
