March 28, 2012
Dear UHD Community:
Once again, another semester is at the half-way point. It seems the weeks from January to mid-March always speed by and this year is no exception. I want to share with you some of UHD's accomplishments and developments for Spring 2012.
Automatic Admission and Tuition/Fees
Earlier in the spring, the UH System Board of Regents approved UHD's automatic admission standards for Fall 2013. The Division of Student Success and Enrollment Management and the Office of Academic Affairs are working to ensure that standards are implemented seamlessly and students are provided pathways to pursue their educational goals at UHD or one of our partner community colleges.
Yesterday, the UH System Board of Regents approved a tuition increase of 3.9 percent for UHD based on a 15-hour course load for in-state undergraduate students (an average increase of $114 per semester). Per state mandate, 20 percent of the tuition increase will be set aside for scholarships and financial aid. The remaining funds will support new and expanded student success initiatives designed to increase graduation rates, such as advising and early interventions. The board also approved an increase in the advising fee to a maximum of $64 per semester based on a 15-hour course load (an increase of $28 per semester.) Combined, the increases come to $142 per semester for a student enrolled in 15 hours.
Increasing tuition and fees is not a decision we make lightly. I extend my thanks to our student, faculty and administrative leadership for their commitment in developing a tuition and fee increase that helps to address the greatest needs of our students, while maintaining our commitment to quality and affordability.
Planning and Budget Development Committee
The work of the University Planning and Budget Development Process is nearing completion and I extend my thanks to the committee members for their effort reviewing the many proposals submitted by units throughout the university. This process reflects the University's commitment to shared governance that includes faculty, staff and students. Despite the tuition and fee increase noted above, it is clear that UHD has needs that far exceed our resources. Future increases in revenue must come primarily through enrollment growth fueled by recruitment and retention.
As we move into another base funding year, our goal is to increase our enrollment by 8 to 10%. This is a significant increase and will require considerable effort from each of us. Wherever you work at UHD, you can influence a student's decision to come to our institution. Please consider spending a few hours promoting UHD thru the recruitment at malls initiative, volunteering at an open house or assisting with another recruitment activity.
I am very pleased to announce that the Corporation for National and Community Service named the University of Houston-Downtown to its 2012 President's Higher Education Community Service Honor Roll with Distinction, recognizing the outreach efforts of UHD students working in community service during the past year.
This recognition acknowledges higher education institutions that reflect the values of exemplary community service and achieve meaningful outcomes in their communities. I extend my personal thanks to the many UHD faculty and staff that provided these opportunities to our students, and to the students whose commitment to our community shines through their service.
Marketing and Branding Campaign
We have undertaken a marketing and branding campaign to promote UHD to potential students and our community. By now, you have seen the Major Opportunity billboards on freeways around our city. There are several more to come, and each one highlights a successful UHD student or alumnus. Other components of the campaign include Web banners, online and Facebook advertisements, radio spots and sponsorship of the Discovery Green Spring Concert Series. In the near future look for companion videos on our YouTube channel and homepage, and signage on our UHD shuttle buses and buildings.
There are opportunities for all of us to get involved and spread the word that UHD provides a Major Opportunity for students seeking to capitalize on their potential and accomplish their dream of a college degree. I thank you for all you do to make UHD a better university and provide opportunities for our current and future students.
P.S. My special thanks to all who have participated in the kickoff of the Faculty/Staff Annual Giving Campaign. Your generosity is another indication of your support of this institution. If you haven't given yet I hope you'll consider making a contribution in the next few weeks. Every gift makes a difference and brings us closer to our participation goal.
