Law and Order - Student Visitors from Taiwan's Central Police University

You'll be seeing some smiling, new faces around the university from mid January to early February as the Criminal Justice Department's Bayou Connection hosts a group of students from the Central Police University in Taiwan.   Mr. Chun-Nan Chen from the Central Police University will accompany the group.

Dr. Hsiao-Ming Wang directs the Bayou Connection, an international outreach project in the Security Management Program.   From Taiwan, where he is teaching this year, he has facilitated the creation of an interesting experience for the visiting students.   They will spend the first week getting to know Houston and touring the Harris County Jail, the Houston Police Department, and NASA.   They hope to learn more about the U.S. criminal justice system and see examples of policing methods and theory.

The next two weeks will be spent in improving their English conversation skills at the English Language Institute (ELI) at UH-Downtown.  

"We've prepared a challenging program to help the students achieve more confidence and sophistication in their English language usage," says Gail Kellersberger, director of the ELI.   "Being in an immersion situation will provide some very nice stretches of their communicative abilities."

If you happen upon one of these students in the hallway over the next few weeks, take a second to stop and chat.   You will be providing a wonderful linguistic experience to an appreciative audience.
