Women's Month
Dr. Victoria Thompson discusses her personal struggles and triumphs with a UH-Downtown audience during Women's Month.
(Houston, Texas, March 12, 2007) Dr. Victoria Thompson from MD Anderson Cancer Center will talk about her struggles, triumphs and pursuit of happiness on Wednesday, March 21 from 10:00 to 11:00 in room 1099N as part of Women's Month activities. Thompson, an Arkansas native, received her masters in nutrition from Pennsylvania State University and her Doctor of Public Health degree from the University of Texas Health Science Center at Houston School of Public Health. As a pre-doc student, she worked in cancer, obesity and Type II diabetes prevention behavioral research at Baylor College of Medicine.
After a brief stint as a post-doc, Thompson took an unusual departure from academia and worked as the Director of Client Relations and Research Liaison (Marketing) for a small Houston-based game developer of serious games designed to prevent pediatric Type II diabetes. She conceived and wrote the original story concept for Escape from Diab, one of the video games designed to prevent obesity and Type 2 diabetes. She is now a project director in the department of Faculty Development at MD Anderson Cancer Center. Dr. Thompson is a published author in various peer-reviewed professional journals. Her passion for family and personal development inspired the creation of The Carlee Dorvis Foundation for Families, an independently owned organization designed to promote positive family cohesion and individual accountability.
Established in 1974, UHD now offers over 40 undergraduate and graduate degrees and has increased 27 percent in student population over the past five years. The new Shea Street Building, scheduled to open if fall 2007, will house the UHD College of Business. The Commerce Street Building was added in 2004 and houses the College of Public Service.
