PAPA SUSSO AND KOUYATE REVEAL MUSICAL TRADITION OF WEST AFRICA

(Houston, Texas, February 18, 2007)   February 23, 2007 is a day to mark on your calendar.   AlHaji Papa Susso, musician and poet, will perform with Balla Kouyate at the Willow Street Pump Station, 811 San Jacinto, at 1 p.m.   These two superb musicians have a long track record of outstanding performances, collaborations, presentations, and musical association, so the concert promises to be memorable.   Papa Susso is a Griot, or oral historian of West African history and traditions in the Gambia.   His Kora, a 21-stringed lute, was handed down in the family over generations.   Balla Kouyate is one of the most famous balafon (African xylophone) players of the Griot tradition in Mali.   His wooden instrument was given to nobles of his family in the 12 th century and is still used today.   Put these two performers together, and you can expect a fascinating musical journey.
