UH-Downtown Educates All Ages, Kids Included

Continuing Education Offers SummerCamps for Kids

(Houston, Texas, April 30, 2007) As the weather heats up, so do parental searches for good summer programs for their children. Well, look no further. UH-Downtown's Continuing Education Division offers a great series of courses where elementary through high school kids can learn things not traditionally offered in schools.

Take JumpStartCamp. 10 to 13 year-olds can dissect animal organs in Mini-Medical School or learn all about brains in That's Using Your Head. These courses are offered in collaboration with the Health Museum. CompuCamp students actually build their own computer or make animations, to name a few of the activities. ScienceCamp students might dissect an owl pellet (oh boy!) or make ice cream without a freezer. Program materials appeal to the kid at heart.

Why are such courses offered?

"After visiting many high schools, I see that children get a core curriculum but they are not getting certain skills needed for survival in college," says G.V. Krishnan, director of the Applied Business and Technology Center. "Parents must agree, because we started in 2001 with one program offered at two locations and we now have four programs offered at six locations."
