UHD Student Art Show is a Visual Feast
(Houston, Texas, April 30, 2007) This month marks the annual art exhibit that speaks most dearly to UHD faculty, staff and students: the UHD Student Exhibition. A work from each student who took a studio art class is displayed gallery style in the O'Kane Gallery for visual consideration, May 3-12, 2007.
"The student show is one way of monitoring the quality of instruction in our art studio classes," says Dr. Susan Baker, associate professor of art and chair of Arts and Humanities. "We have some really good teachers who are helping students with little or no experience in art to produce some amazing work."
Studio arts at UHD focus mainly on design, painting, watercolor, drawing and figure drawing. Thus the student show offers mainly two-dimensional works.
"For many students this show is the first time their work is exhibited, and they get pretty excited about it," says Mark Cervenka, assistant professor of art and gallery director.
Cervenka welcomes any artist's proposal, submitted with images, a resume, a project description, a time frame, and other relevant data.
"All proposals are evaluated," Cervenka says. "Of course, it's a highly competitive process."
The UHD Student Show is also juried, and there are cash prizes for winners. This year, artist Mari Mori will be jurying the exhibition. (Mori's present works, reflecting an investigation into tea, will be exhibited at the O'Kane Gallery in October of this year.)

Established in 1974, UHD now offers over 40 undergraduate and graduate degrees and has increased 27 percent in student population over the past five years. The new Shea Street Building, scheduled to open in fall 2007, will house the UHD College of Business. The Commerce Street Building was added in 2004 and houses the College of Public Service.
