TALENTED UHD STUDENT, TIMIKA SIMMONS, LANDS CENTER FOR HOUSTON'S FUTURE INTERNSHIP
(Houston, Texas, February 5, 2007) The competition was fierce for the single internship offered by the nonprofit Center for Houston's Future (CHF) which serves, in affiliation with the Greater Houston Partnership, as the "think tank" for Houston's future. The Center was looking for a professional, well-spoken, presentable intern who could meet and speak with the major CEOs in the city of Houston. They interviewed from universities in Houston and even from other areas of the state. Amazingly, they found two applicants so perfect for the position that they created an extra position to accommodate the talent. One of those two applicants was UH-Downtown student Timika Simmons.
"I wanted this so badly for the sake of blessing others," Simmons says. To her UHD professor and mentor Dr. Lucille Pointer, she adds, "I consider myself to be favored knowing someone as wonderful as you."
If you haven't yet met Simmons, look out! She talks ninety miles a minute and, if you could see her schedule, you'd understand why. This dedicated wife, mother of three young daughters and active church member (slated to make a missionary trip to Africa this fall) is a UHD Student Council Senator and Student Regent Liaison as well as a member of the Student Publications committee and a member of the American Marketing Association. She just doesn't slow down as she works toward her May graduation date for an Interdisciplinary Studies degree.
Although she laughingly tells her husband that her dream is to have a building named after her when she dies, Simmons' true goal is to be a public figure. Why? Because she wants to make a difference. Simmons admires people who don't just talk, but do. From her CHF internship, she hopes to learn more about networking and how community leaders think and manage their non-work tasks, those endeavors that result in great contribution to the Houston community.
"There's so much to be done for people," she says. "I mean to do it!"
