Science and Engineering Fair

UH-Downtown's Dr. Larry Spears Sponsored the 48th Science and Engineering Fair of Houston

1100 Secondary Student Projects were Judged at the 48th Science and Engineering Fair of Houston

Get ready for a new wave of up and coming scientists!   UH-Downtown demonstrated its interest in supporting college readiness by co-sponsoring (with the Houston Museum of Natural Science) the 48th Science and Engineering Fair of Houston (SEFH). This year, the SEFH took place March 22 - 24 at the George R. Brown Convention Center in Hall E, where 1100 secondary projects were exhibited by individuals and teams.

The SEFH is committed to project learning.   Houston secondary students display original projects from a wide array of sciences for judging.   Winning projects receive awards, and the fair also honors science teachers by conferring three Teacher of the Year awards.   The SEFH hosts some of the brightest secondary science and math students from Houston, some of whom attend UH-Downtown later to continue their studies.

Dr. Larry Spears, UHD professor and chair of Chemistry and Executive Director of the SEFH, has been the guiding force and fire behind the fair these many years.   His belief and passion have made the fair what it is today.   UHD President Max Castillo is on the SEFH Board of Directors, and other UHD employees Heather Davis, program coordinator in Natural Sciences, and Rene Garcia, program manager of Scholars Academy, chair SEFH committees.   The entries for science writing were judged through the auspices of Dr. Patricia Golemon and Dr. Aimee Roundtree, both UHD assistant professors of English.   Finally, UHD juniors and seniors in the sciences joined experienced judges to evaluate team projects, giving students a different perspective of competitive science.    For information on awards and winners, click on www.uhd.edu/academic/colleges/sciences/naturalscience/SEFH.
