UHD Influence Reaches All the Way to the Texas Governorship

Mario Gallegos is Honored as Governor for the Day

(Houston, Texas, May 20, 2007) Cinco de Mayo saw a new twist this year as Houston residents of Magnolia Park celebrated Cinco de Mario. What prompted this departure from tradition? Texas State Senate Pro Tem Mario Gallegos was sworn in on May 7, 2007 as Governor for the Day.

Following traditions of Texas government, the Governor and Lieutenant Governor leave the state for one day, officially making the President Pro Tem (third in line for the Office of Governor) Governor of Texas. Gallegos, a kid from Houston's barrio, spent 22 years as a firefighter, then went on to represent firefighters, police, and constituents as Harris County's first Hispanic state senator. Gallegos completed a Bachelor of Science degree in Criminal Justice at UH-Downtown.
