Louis Evans wins a 6-year term on the Board of Trustees for the Harris County Department of Education
Good news! Louis Evans, Director of the College of Public Service Advising Center, ran for and won the position of Board Member on the Board of Trustees of the Harris County Department of Education (HCDE). His six-year term begins January 1, 2007.
"I'm looking forward to this," says Evans. "I've actually met the board members, the superintendent and all the executive team. They're a very dedicated group of people who have the children and the educators of Harris County in their best interest, and I'm going to enjoy working with them."
The Board of Trustees provides oversight and guidance for the HCDE, whose mission since its inception in 1889 has been to provide support for the children and educators of Harris County.
The HCDE accomplishes its mission through programs and professional development training. The programs handle special problems and needs that cannot easily be answered in class. For example, the Early Childhood Intervention program helps kids from birth to three years of age who are developing later than normal in areas like sitting, walking, and playing with their toys.
Evans attended a board meeting on Nov. 14, 2006. He was very impressed when a mother discussed her personal experiences with the Early Childhood Intervention program. She explained how HCDE professionals talked with her and worked with her child in a series of visits and follow-up sessions. They really helped her child get a good start in life. Due to their support and concern, she felt that she had made lifelong friends. Listening to this story, Evans could see the very real results and gratitude that the HCDE program evoked. He was ready to provide service for such a supportive organization and will get his chance, come January!
