David Levi Strauss Lectures on Images of Abu Ghraib

(Houston, Texas, April 13, 2007)   To what depth do you understand the world that we live in and perpetuate? Writer and art critic David Levi Strauss is prepared to examine and stretch that understanding with his lecture entitled Breakdown in the Gray Room: The Images of Abu Ghraib. The UH-Downtown Cultural Enrichment Center and FotoFest are co-sponsoring two lectures by Professor Strauss, one to be delivered at UH-Downtown on Thursday, April 19 from 1:00 to 2:30 in room A-436. Students, staff and faculty are welcome.  

The lectures, presented in conjunction with an exhibit by FotoFest entitled Guantánamo. Pictures of Home.   Questions of Justice., may challenge some of your ideas about the United States. Consider this comment:   "The pointed hood or hat is an ancient symbol and shamanic trope eliciting fear and respect." Also consider a settling cup of tea before the lecture - it promises to pierce our comfortable stupor.
