JHONATHAN SHAIKH, VOLUNTEER STUDENT CHAIR OF CAREER EXPO

(February 18, 2007) Job hunters, take notice!   UH-Downtown Career Expo is coming up on February 28, 2007.   This is the perfect time to make those essential contacts, learn what a company wants and has to offer, and discover the best method for applying to the company.

"The most important thing for students is to know why they are there," says Steve Markert, career development counselor and field coordinator at UHD.   "Many employers will not accept resumes at the expo, but they are ready to answer questions and talk about their companies.   The successful student goes with the idea of building relationships."

Jhonathan Shaikh, student volunteer chair of Career Expo, is concerned with building relationships, as well.   He wants employers greeted by well-dressed, smiling, professional-looking students, and that is what he requires of his volunteers.   He created a new and successful system requiring four managers of four committees:   hospitality, registration, catering and parking.   The volunteers are recruited from UHD student organizations and trained prior to the expo.   Shaikh's idea is that the group not only does something for themselves but also for their university.   Shaikh believes that the system will keep running long after he leaves.

"I have worked up enthusiasm and momentum for this system, and it is my gift to my university," Shaikh says.
