O'Kane Gallery Opening of Audrey Buller: A Magic Realist in Retrospect at O'Kane Gallery

January 17, 2007 marks the opening of the important exhibit entitled Audrey Buller: A Magic Realist in Retrospect at UH-Downtown's O'Kane Gallery.  Mark Cervenka, director of the gallery, feels that Buller's work has been underrepresented and deserves greater exposure to viewers than previously available.

Buller (1902 - 1984) began exhibiting in 1920 and was stylistically aligned with the Magic Realists.   Magic Realism art, while anchored in everyday reality, displays overtones of wonder. Magic realists strive to expand reality by treating subjects with such intensity and thus exaggeration that the subjects are defamiliarized, becoming magical and wondrous.   The New York Times described Buller's work from a 1920 exhibit as "painted with luscious tactile surfaces, every detail as important as every other."  

The Opening Reception on January 17th is from 6:00 to 8:00 at One Main Street, third floor.  Parking is available in Visitor Parking, Travis and Girard. Gallery hours are Monday through Saturday, 10:00 am to 5:00 pm. The exhibit is sponsored in part by the Houston Arts Alliance and KUHF.
