Araceli Garcia Interns in the Texas State House of Representatives
(Houston, Texas, March 26, 2007) Araceli Garcia ('05, English) knew in elementary school that she wanted to be a lawyer. A UHD degree in English was a step along that path.
Garcia, youngest of eight, has two older sisters who graduated from UHD, another presently a student, and nephews who will be upcoming UHD students.
Garcia sees herself as a product of UHD's Learner's Community. Their guidance helped her use her achievement to empower others academically through peer tutoring and supplemental instruction. She was also the President of B.L.U.E. (Best Leaders United for Excellence), a campus organization that won the Best New Student Organization of the Year award in 2004, Best Student Organization of Year 2005 and Most Active Organization in 2005-2005.
After graduating, Garcia first interned at the Hispanic Association of Colleges and Universities for the Department of Treasury's Financial Management Services, then wrote and researched products for 3M. She now holds an internship in the Moreno/Rangel Legislative Leadership Program with the Mexican American Legislative Caucus, working as a Legislative Aide in the Texas House of Representatives with State Representative Roberto R. Alonzo who sits on the Higher Education and Judiciary Committees.
Garcia realizes that a J.D. in immigration law has applications to a political career. She plans to enter law school at University of Texas when her internship ends.
"I want to be someone who helps those who need help – an advocate for those who don't have the education or resources that others might have," she says.

Established in 1974, UHD now offers over 40 undergraduate and graduate degrees and has increased 27 percent in student population over the past five years. The new Shea Street Building, scheduled to open in fall 2007, will house the UHD College of Business. The Commerce Street Building was added in 2004 and houses the College of Public Service.
