Years ago, students were honored for their various academic and service achievements at the One Main Event. Now, UHD's One Main Event focuses upon student club awards while the UHD Academic Awards ceremony rewards scholarship and other academic achievements. This year's Academic Awards ceremony was held in May. "The Academic Awards Program provides an opportunity for faculty to identify outstanding students in their courses," says Dr. Molly Woods, Vice President of Academic Affairs and Provost. For example, the College of Business will recognize its 11 new BMC Software and Bobby Bizzell scholarship winners: Marcus Paley, Nicholaus Gaytan, Kevin Wright, Dania Lainez, Kevin Kerner, Veronica Rodriguez, Nathaniel R.Nouri, Robert King, Vantrice Ware, Janna Delyce McKeehan, and Maria G. Garcia. These juniors and seniors had to have a GPA of 3.5 or better. BMC Software also offers internships and full time employment for COB students. 50 students have won BMC scholarships over the past five years. Six have gotten internships and one scholarship recipient landed a full time job. Janna Delyce McKeehan, one of the winners, sums up the feeling of the group for BMC's support of UH-Downtown COB students: "I was very honored to receive the scholarship. I think BMC is doing great things for the students here at UHD. We work hard to keep our GPA's up, and being recognized by BMC through a scholarship is a wonderful thing. I know the other recipients feel the same way, too."
