(January 29, 2007) The annual J. Don Boney, Sr. Book Scholarship/Image Awards Luncheon will be held February 22, 2007, commemorating Black History Month and the contributions of African Americans to American history as well as underscoring the diversity of UH-Downtown. The luncheon theme is "Dreams to Destiny."
Named for Dr. J. Don Boney, Sr., the first UH-Downtown chancellor (now called president) who served from 1975-79, the luncheon is part of an effort to provide financial support to UH-Downtown students in the form of a book scholarship.
In keeping with both Black History Month and the luncheon's theme, the keynote speaker will be NASA Space Shuttle Discovery Astronaut Stephanie Wilson, mission specialist on the July 4, 2006 flight and the second African American woman to make a space flight. Wilson worked on launch vehicles and robotic spacecraft and ultimately flew on the STS-121 return-to-flight test mission. Her fascination with space is a natural outgrowth of her quest for knowledge and its application.
